Effective communication remains one of the key challenges in cross-border rail operations, especially in the multilingual European context.

The current prototype version of the Translate4Rail Language Tool (T4R LT) already supports Infrastructure Managers (IMs) and Railway Undertakings (RUs) by enabling multilingual communication through predefined messages and translation functionalities.

The next phase is now underway: RNE has launched the procurement procedurefor further tool development based on sector requirements, to support its transition towards operational use.

Background and status of the tool

The T4R LT was initially developed under the Shift2Rail programme by the RNE–International Union of Railways (UIC) consortium.

The prototype introduced a structured communication approach based on predefined messages to support exchanges between train drivers and traffic controllers across borders, while maintaining safety standards. It has already been tested on selected corridors and cross-border sections, providing valuable feedback for further development.

The main objectives of the upcoming development phase are:

• Higher accuracy in speech recognition and translation
• Improved recognition of variables
• Development of a reliable free speech translation algorithm
• Extension of predefined messages for traffic management
• Introduction of new user functionalities and supporting training materials

The upgraded solution must meet clearly defined functional and technical requirements.

A core element is the modular structure of the tool, including:

• A speech-to-text module converting spoken input into text
• A translation module handling predefined messages, variables and free speech
• A text-to-speech module delivering translated output to the user

These modules must work seamlessly together, even if developed separately. Furthermore, the tool must be customised to individual railway operational needs, including the use of railway-specific terminology, which will be provided by RNE.

Impact on the European rail sector

Language barriers continue to affect the efficiency of cross-border rail services. By supporting clearer and more standardised communication, T4R LT Next is expected to further improve interoperability and railway operation communication.

In this way, the planned developments contribute not only to day-to-day operational efficiency, but also to broader European objectives such as the digitalisation of rail operation communication, the harmonisation of procedures and the reduction of delays at borders. They also support closer cooperation between operational actors across different national systems.
