Celebrating 20 Years of RNE – a Journey of Progress and Partnership

The year 2024 marked a significant milestone in RailNetEurope’s (RNE) history – the 20th anniversary of its founding.

To conclude the anniversary year, this landmark occasion brought together past and present leaders, members, and stakeholders to reflect on the achievements of the past two decades and to look ahead at the promising future of RNE.

Reflecting on Two Decades of Growth

The evening featured a distinguished panel of speakers, each of whom has played a pivotal role in shaping RNE’s journey.

Moderated by Joachim Kroll (Secretary General), Elisabeth Hochhold (Head of Legal, Sales & HR), and Harald Reisinger (CIO & CFO), their insights provided a thoughtful overview of RNE’s development from a small organisation to a key player in European rail infrastructure management.

Past and present presidents of RNE took part in the panel discussion:

Barbara Morgante, one of RNE’s foundational figures, Vice-President, as well as representative of the founding President Nicola Mandarino, highlighted the crucial role of RNE’s first President, Nicola Mandarino. She shared heartfelt memories of his vision and perseverance, which laid the groundwork for RNE’s success despite early challenges. Barbara’s own contributions, as both a Vice-President and a guiding force during RNE’s formative years, were also celebrated.

Luc Vansteenkiste, RNE President from 2013 – 2021 and from Infrabel, reflected on his efforts in professionalising RNE’s processes and advancing its IT systems. His tenure highlighted the importance of precision and adaptability in fostering organisational growth.

Harald Hotz, who dedicated much of his career to RNE and served as President from 2013 – 2021, reflected on the balance between pragmatism and assertiveness in navigating key milestones, such as the strategic takeover of Pathfinder. Harald’s commitment to preserving the legacy of Nicola Mandarino through his frequently referenced wisdom was especially heartfelt.

Paul Mazataud, the current President since 2021, from SNCF Réseau, provided insights into RNE’s more recent achievements, including securing financial stability and influencing pivotal legislative developments. Looking to the future, Paul emphasised the importance of continued collaboration and innovation as RNE enters its next phase.

A Vision for the Future

The panellists shared their aspirations for RNE’s future, emphasising themes of flexibility, resilience, and stakeholder engagement.

From adapting to rapidly evolving industry demands to maintaining a strong focus on digital transformation, RNE’s mission remains clear: to enhance European railways’ capacity and efficiency while fostering seamless international cooperation.

Gratitude and Reflection

Throughout the evening, heartfelt gratitude was extended to the many colleagues and contributors who have contributed to RNE’s success over the years.

From founding members to current leaders, the collective effort and shared vision of countless professionals have driven RNE’s progress.

Moving Forward Together

As RNE marks 20 years of achievements, the organisation prepares to embark on a new chapter.

With a continued focus on collaboration, innovation, and excellence, RNE remains dedicated to advancing European rail infrastructure.

RNE looks forward to continuing its progress and cooperation in the decades to come.
