RNE is working together with TRT Trasporti e Territorio Srl (IT) and Hacon Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH (DE) as contracted consultants on a feasibility study preparing the future European Transport Market Study (ETMS).

Transport Market Studies are an important tool to gain knowledge of the mobility market. Currently, Rail Freight Corridors are required to conduct Transport Market Studies (TMS) based on the Rail Freight Corridor Regulation.

The draft Regulation on use of railway infrastructure capacity published on 11 July 2023 proposes that a European Transport Market Study (ETMS) be carried out at regular intervals, covering both passenger and freight.

In parallel, the European Commission has commissioned RNE to check the feasibility of how a European Transport Market Study could be performed both in the way that it can be sustainably kept up to date using existing data sources and that it delivers knowledge in the detail and format that is required to drive the use of railway infrastructure towards the most value of its users.

The feasibility study entails a survey addressed to all users (direct or indirect), planners and regulators of railway infrastructure capacity; which will be followed up by workshops aimed at topics highlighted by the survey.

RNE therefore kindly invites all interested parties of the railway sector to contribute their knowledge, expectations and ideas about the future ETMS here by 15 October 2023.
