The “Implementation of the Telematics Application for European Interoperability” (2018-EU-TM-0063-S) project has recently been successfully completed.
This is a vital next step in enhancing the competitiveness and market share of rail transport in Europe.
On 17 March 2025, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) announced the successful completion of the project.
The EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Programme co-funded it to support its implementation.
“Implementation of the Telematics Application for European Interoperability”
The “Implementing Telematics Applications for European Interoperability” project (2018-EU-TM-0063-S) aims to enhance the attractiveness and efficiency of international rail freight transport.
By harmonising EU rules on digital communication in freight and passenger transport (TAF and TAP TSIs), the project enables seamless and standardised data exchange across the sector.
This strengthens rail’s competitiveness and supports the shift of more freight from road to rail.
The participants in this collaboration between RailNetEurope (RNE) include several major European Infrastructure Managers (IMs):
Key Advancements
The successful implementation of Telematics Applications marks another important step towards a more flexible, digital, and European rail transport system.
With the project’s completion, RNE and the IMs have implemented the following key advancements in rail interoperability:
- Increased accessibility across European platforms via standardised Central Reference Data (CRD).
- Enhanced data interoperability through the overhaul and deployment of a new Common Interface (CI) specification.
- Optimised data solutions for key rail systems (RFP, RINF, PCS, TIS, …) using big data.
- More efficient path allocation and capacity management through ongoing implementation of the Timetable Redesign (TTR).
- Improved operations with the deployment of real-time messaging, automated translation, and improved data exchange
This milestone underscores the power of collaboration in modernising Europe’s rail networks.
