User Insight: TIS Enhances Cross-Border Operations in Slovakia

The Train Information System (TIS) continues to expand across Europe and has now been successfully implemented at Slovak border stations.

ŽSR, the Railways of the Slovak Republic, provided its operational staff – specifically train dispatchers – with access to TIS at selected border stations.

We want to thank ŽSR for the feedback that was shared with us directly, offering first-hand insight into the system’s practical benefits.

The Train Information System

TIS is a web-based application that supports international traffic management by providing real-time data for passenger and freight trains.

Its key benefits for users include:

  • Full visibility of train movements
  • Improved cross-border coordination
  • Faster, data-driven decision-making

By enhancing transparency and efficiency, TIS helps streamline operations and enhance punctuality.

TIS Implementation at ŽSR Border Stations

ŽSR introduced TIS in February 2025 to its operational station dispatchers at approximately 95% of border stations.

The primary objective is to provide station dispatchers with real-time information on incoming trains from neighbouring infrastructure manager as they approach Slovak border stations.

The implementation process was smooth, with no major complications. Feedback from operational staff confirms that the application is user-friendly and does not add to their workload.

TIS serves as a valuable tool by consolidating international train information in one place, available in the user’s preferred language.

The Spacetime Diagram, which is frequently used in operations, is one of the most appreciated features and contributes to better traffic and operational management.

Following this successful deployment, ŽSR plans further expansions.

While TIS is currently being deployed at border stations, future plans include extending the system to other locations, such as marshalling yards.

Ongoing TIS Developments

RNE remains in close contact with stakeholders and conducts annual surveys to gather user feedback.

Today, TIS is already used successfully by 29 Infrastructure Managers, 171 Railway Undertakings and 18 Terminals across Europe. This wide adoption reflects its added value in daily operations and long-term planning.

This continuous exchange enables us to enhance TIS in line with the needs of its users, ensuring the system delivers the greatest possible benefit.
