With RNE’s Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA), a crucial milestone has been reached in efforts to increase the efficiency of the European railway system. The project intends to provide train running forecasts for all trains circulating on the European railway network.
RNE Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA)
The main objectives of the RNE Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) Programme are:
- Accurate Forecasts: The Programme aims to enhance the accuracy of train arrival forecasts.
- Effective Use of Resources: ETA is helping railways and stakeholders manage their resources more effectively.
To achieve this, ETAs calculations are going to be powered by an algorithm using artificial intelligence.
ETA & TIS: Forecasting for the European Railway Network
Following the successful implementation of previous phases, efforts are now focused on the implementation of the Network ETA, which will cover all trains circulating on the European railway network.
This challenging task involves developing a forecasting module within the RNE Train Information System (TIS) application using AI technologies.
Milestone Achieved: Start of TIS Adaption
Following the RNE members’ decision to introduce a central solution for ETA, a public procurement for the adaptation of the RNE TIS was conducted in the first half of 2024.
The public procurement process concluded with a selection of a contractor who will start the module development.
The Network ETA forecasts:
- are expected in the first half of 2025
- will be available in RNE TIS to railway stakeholders involved in the specific train runs.
